Welcome to this month’s newsletter! This month I have been flat out. It is a little hard to find time to write around the day job, particularly with lots of deadlines coming up for the end of the year. So this one’s going to be a little short. But, I found a short story I wrote about a year ago for my writers’ group, which I haven’t yet shared. It’s a little silly, but those are always the fun ones. I may be a little obsessed with gnomes… The Princess and the GnomeOnce there was a princess who became lost in a forest. She wandered about all morning, in much despair, until she came upon a small garden. Now, this garden belonged to a gnome, who grew turnips. He loved his turnips dearly, had named them all, and spoke with each and every one daily. He protected his garden fiercely, and had placed both traps and protective spells to keep his beloved turnips safe. Seeing the turnips there, and famished as she was, the princess reached out to take one, activating every trip wire and ward the gnome had meticulously put in place. But this particular princess was protected by a magic fairy. Spells bounced harmlessly off her golden hair, traps snapped impotently at her muddied pink hem, but none could stop the princess lifting the biggest, tastiest turnip and biting into it. At that moment, the gnome entered his garden to speak with his turnips. Seeing the mangled vegetable in the girl’s hand, he screeched: “No! Not Patrick! Why?” So great was his shock that he exploded into a thousand tiny pieces. The princess looked about her at the scattered, sparkling pieces of gnome, and thought them quite pretty, like confetti. She collected every single one and put them into her golden hair, then, energised with Patrick in her belly, she skipped off through the forest. Her magic fairy was quite annoyed at these events. It was not technically her job to guide the princess to or from any particular locale, but only keep her safe wherever she should wander. However, if she were to explode any more forest spirits, this would surely compromise her personal safety yet again. And so, promising herself she would speak to the king and queen about that raise, the magic fairy guided the princess safely home. THE END Also, here are the results from last month's poll. And for this month’s poll, another one just for fun.
That's all from me for this month. Until the next newsletter! Laura.
